Astronaut Recovery Trainer

Overview

Situation

The Air Force Guardian Angel squadrons have a severely limited ability to train for recovering astronauts from the SpaceX Dragon Capsule if it lands far away from its target landing site. They asked the GRILL to create a simulation that runs trainees through the steps of recovering astronauts.

Task

The simulation needed to include realistic water, a capsule with astronauts, and a checklist of tasks for the trainee to do when recovering astronauts.

Action

Wright Scholars used Unreal Engine, the Oculus Rift S, a realistic water plugin, and Blender to create an immersive and interactive VR simulation.

Result

The students produced a retrieve-and-rescue simulation where players must complete a thorough checklist of tasks to ensure the astronauts are safe (while at sea). This included steps like properly removing the capsule's latch, recognizing chemical hazards, applying first aid, removing seat restraints, and stabilizing the capsule.

Future

Future improvements include the ability to train on other capsules, and multiplayer capabilities.
