GRILL OpenDIS Plugin
The GRILL team set out to make an OpenDIS plugin for Unreal Engine.
Initially presented at IronDev 2022.
Later made into a full open source plugin.
Summer STEM Projects
Flight PASS
Sheppard Air Force Base challenged The GRILL to create a simulation for extinguishing air plane fires, specifically with a special fire extinguisher called a Halon Fire Extinguisher.
Using Unreal Engine 4, HTC Vive, and 3D printing, the students created a mixed reality simulation for fire extinguisher usage on airplanes.
Laser Eye Protection
The Optical Radiation Bioeffects Branch in the 711th HPW challenged the GRILL to make a simulation that allows people to experience the tinted vision that is caused by wearing laser eye protection.
Using Unreal Engine 4, HTC Vive Pro, and Tobii eye tracking, the students created a VR simulation which provides realistic laser effects and tint effects that come with wearing laser eye protection
M.E.A.T.S.
Ted Harmer with Calamityville challenged the GRILL to make an RPG simulator that interfaces with existing DIS enabled simulations at Calamityville.
Using Unreal Engine 4, HTC Vive, Raspberry Pi, and DIS, the students created a mixed reality simulation that allows you to shoot an RPG in conjunction with other simulations at Calamityville.
Teams In Danger
Summer Rebensky with Aptima challenged the GRILL to make a realistic multiplayer search and rescue simulation for conducting research on teams and team interactions
Using Unreal Engine 4, VaRest, and Mixamo, the students created a collapsed building scenario simulation.
Identify Friend Or Foe
The Optical Radiation Bioeffects Branch in the 711th HPW challenged the GRILL to create a simulation that studies reaction time while wearing laser eye protection goggles.
Using Unreal Engine 4, CMUSphinx, Oculus Rift, and Logitech Extreme 3D joystick, the students created a flight simulation which you must navigate under the effects of different laser eye protection goggles.
