Virtual Escape Room

Students will use SketchUp and Unreal Engine 4 to create a breakout/escape room style game where the puzzles require relevant mathematical concepts to solve. This Challenge Problem is designed to be used in high school mathematics or STEM classroom.

Full Throttle STEM Autonomous Rovers 

Students are challenged to construct an autonomous rover capable of simple collision detection, environmental sensor collection, and autonomous race track navigation tasks.

Businesses and industries can use commercial off-the-shelf modeling & simulation tools to create customized training environments without a large investment. This challenge problem content provides students with the opportunity to create virtual models similar to those used by industry professionals while using racing as the topic of interest.

Businesses can improve the experience of their customers using modeling & simulation. This challenge problem content encourages students to create an immersive 3D environment to allow customers to maneuver through a company’s facilities in a virtual tour.

Full Throttle STEM Rover 

Robots can be deployed into the field for a number of reasons, such as to collect data, explore terrain, and even search for life. This challenge problem content encourages students to tackle similar challenges faced by the Air Force Research Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon Field Robotics Center, and NASA, such as autonomous movement, sensor data collection, and wireless communication, using a rover.

Android Mapping Application Challenge Problem - Write an app for an Android device that displays a Google Map and responds to user touches by displaying the latitude and longitude of the point touched.

Control a Rover from an Android Device Challenge Problem - Control a rover from an Android device by connecting the rover and Android to programmable boards with radio transmitter/receiver shields and writing the app for the Android device and programming the boards.

Logging GPS Data to an SD Card Challenge Problem - Put a GPS shield on an Arduino™ board and log the motion of the board through a series of GPS points stored to a SD shield.

Drive Autonomously with an Android App Challenge Problem - Design a system that enables a rover to follow a path drawn by a user on an Android device.

Travel with Autonomous Obstacle Avoidance Challenge Problem - Add sensors to the rover that allow it to be autonomous, avoiding obstacles in its way.

Android App to Display Telemetric Data on a Map Challenge Problem - Write an Android app to integrate telemetric data onto a Google Map.

Businesses such as indoor go-karting facilities can improve customer safety by using modeling and simulation to test aspects of their facility such as track and barrier materials, visual cues, and physiological impact. This challenge problem content encourages students to learn about designing for safety through modeling and simulation.

Rapid 3D Modeling

Creating a complex model, like a human, in a 3D modeling application can be very time consuming and requires a great deal of skill. Rapid 3D modeling reduces the time it takes to generate a model, and increases the flexibility with what can be modeled. This challenge problem content provides students with the opportunity to utilize commercial off-the-shelf technologies and computer software to create 3D models rapidly.

Print an Action Figure Challenge Problem - Modify a full-body scan to create an action figure of a person with parts that can be posed and then printed using a 3D printer.

Animate a Figure in a Gaming Engine Challenge Problem - Import a full-body scan and modify the figure so that it can be animated in the virtual environment.

A small-scale, cost effective processor design supporting localized production of biodiesel would be valuable for small businesses, local cooperatives and community initiatives. This challenge problem content encourage students to model a biodiesel processor.

Calculus Volumes 

When calculus students begin calculating volumes of solids generated by cross-sections or rotations, they will often experience difficulty setting up the correct mathematics because they cannot visualize the solid. This challenge provides students with an opportunity to create a way to visualize these three dimensional solids in a classroom using low cost to no cost technologies.

Virtual Ohio

Training capabilities of first responders can be improved by using modeling and simulation of areas of interest such as fire stations, hospitals, and factory buildings. This challenge problem content encourages students to develop a high fidelity virtual model of an area of interest in Ohio.

Stop the Spread

Remaining indoors in the winter in constant contact with others can be dangerous due to the threat of a contagious virus. This challenge problem content encourages students to use modeling and simulation to understand and slow down the spread of a virus.

This challenge problem content provides students with the opportunity to create virtual models similar to those used by industry professionals using racing as the topic of interest.

Animate and Control a Character in a Game Challenge Problem - Import, animate, and control a real person or custom-created character to function as a character in an off-the-shelf or custom-created game or simulation.

Virtual Control Challenge Problem - Deviate from traditional game control, such as keyboard, joystick or gaming controller, and incorporate virtual control of a simulation or game such that game control or character movement would mimic physical player movement.

Virtual Game Simulation: The Big Challenge - Identify a training or learning need and then design, develop, and test a virtual serious game to meet the specific needs of the end users.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is an enhanced view of the environment produced by overlaying computer-generated images, sounds, or other data onto a real-world environment. This challenge problem content encourages students to apply augmented reality to a training system, such as demonstrating how a machine works.

Shipping Container Conundrum 

Shipping containers used for transporting goods and services accumulate and go to waste after transportation is complete. This challenge problem content encourages students to find new uses for the unused shipping containers, such as re-purposing them as temporary or even permanent housing.

Indoor Positioning 

The goal of indoor positioning systems (IPS) is to leverage magnetic, sensor, and/or network technologies to wirelessly locate objects or people inside buildings. This challenge problem content encourages students to use IPS to enhance location detection in an application, such as an emergency response situations or customer experience in a retail store.

Heart Function

ECG, or an electrocardiogram, is a physiological measure of the electrical activity of the heart. This challenge problem content encourages students learn about the heart’s function using ECG data.

Diabetes Monitoring

This challenge problem requires students to develop prototypes that will successfully collect and present visual representations of health-related data. The prototypes should be able to record blood glucose, food, medications, mood, and activity, as well as provide visual displays for these parameters.

Concussion Rehabilitation  

During rehabilitation from a concussion, the brain will begin re-routing activity to healthy connections, avoiding those that have been damaged, using a process called neuroplasticity. This challenge problem content encourages students to learn about brain rehabilitation by designing applications that can enhance neuroplasticity.
